This was the worst car rental experience I have ever had and would never rent from Dollar or Hertz (their counter administrator) in Lima airport. They did not have our reserved car available when we got there in the evening. Their staff, (she told us her name was "Elizabeth"), refused to upgrade us to the next larger available vehicle as would normally be the practice; instead they gave us a smaller car, and charged us the same rate as for our larger reserved car, claiming that the rate for the smaller vehicle had gone up since we had made our original reservation! Then, they doubled the price of the rental by insisting that our U.S. auto insurance coverage would not be acceptable unless we allowed them to reserve an $8000 line on our credit card. If we paid them for a lower but still not complete level of coverage through Dollar, they would reserve a $1000 line on our credit card. That way if there was any damage to the vehicle, they would take it directly from us and we would have to deal with our insurance company to get reimbursed when we returned to the U.S. The only way to avoid using up credit on our own card was to pay them for separate coverage at the counter. This doubled our rental cost. The rental car agent at the counter next to Hertz/Dollar told us that what Hertz/Dollar was doing to us was illegal. We were stuck and paid for the insurance add-on. Avoid Hertz/Dollar at all costs in Lima!
